newsletter archive newsletter 14 - autumn 2008 2008 prizes calling all artists ! prizes to be wonExhibitions mean opportunities to sell works. The ING Discerning Eye is a show where there is a 'buying tradition', much like at the Summer Exhibition. This year, as usual, there will also be a number of valuable prizes offered for the best works. And, as many artists will know, winning a prize can be formative. The ING Purchase Prize, for £5,000 brings with it the accolade of joining the prestigious and renowned Collection at the offices of DE Exhibition sponsor ING. For last year's ING prizewinner, Susan Angharad Williams (who had entered via the open submission), to have the quality of her work recognised was "tremendous boost to my confidence", spurring her on this year to work with a "heightened sense of intensity and purpose" towards the other opportunity afforded by ING: a solo show at their London headquarters at the end of October. As for the prize money, Susan has been able to put this towards constructing a new website, framing and learning a new discipline - etching. A report on her first solo show will be in the next DE newsletter. A new prize will be awarded this year - The Discerning Eye Founder's Prize, a purchase prize in honour of Michael Reynolds. The 2008 Founder's Prize will be for £2,500 and will be chosen by Michael's friend, Brian Sewell. Other prizes on offer are ~ The Chairman's Purchase Prize - £1,000 The Meynell Fenton Prize - £1,000 The Benton Purchase Prize - £1,000 The Humphreys Purchase Prize - £750 The Arts Club Prize - one year's full membership to the prestigious Members' Club in the West End of London, established in 1863 for those engaged in the arts, literature or science There will also be up to eight prizes of £250 awarded to an outstanding entry from the REGIONS of - Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, the Midlands, East Anglia, the North of England, London & South East and the West Country. ![]() The Meynell Fenton Prize, 2004
