The 2008 ING Discerning Eye Exhibition approaches fast and we are again privileged to have a distinguished and dedicated line up of selectors, who gathered in early September to sift through well over 2000 works entered into the open submission by hundreds of hopefuls.

The artist selectors this year are Fred Cuming RA, one of England's most respected painters, a Rome scholar who studied at Sidcup School of Art and the Royal College and who is well known for his moody and atmospheric landscapes and Anita Klein, a Fellow and past President of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers (re) whose striking works depict family life (more often than not of her own family) and grace many private and public collections in Europe, the USA and Australia, including the Arts Council of Great Britain.

Our collectors in 2008 are former DE Chairman, Bob Benton and Brenda Fenton who has been associated with The Discerning Eye since its earliest days and who has generously sponsored a prize at the annual exhibition for over 10 years.

Frances Carey is one of this year's 'critic' selectors. She is an author, former Deputy Keeper of Prints and Drawings and currently Head of National Programmes at the British Museum. Our other critic is Robin Morgan, Editor of The Sunday Times Magazine, which is admired for its international photojournalism and illustration. Robin is also an award winning journalist, author and judge for the British Press Awards.

For the open submission artists whose work was selected, ING Discerning Eye 2008 will give them the opportunity to hang alongside internationally recognised names, including Craigie Aitchison RA, Paula Rego and Sonia Lawson RA, RWS. Anita Klein's advice to young artists is to go for 'open' shows; open to enter and open to the public, as they provide the best (and most cost effective) way to secure the greatest number of viewers. DE Member Judith Gardner has had four of her paintings chosen this year, by three of the selectors. Despite entering being 'a gamble', Judith was delighted to have been selected. "You never know who is going to visit the Exhibition", she remarked. "I hope this will open doors".

The Mall Galleries will open their doors to the 2008 ING Discerning Eye Exhibition on Thursday 13 November. The show will run until Sunday 23 November. Open daily from 10.00am to 5.00pm.
