newsletter archive newsletter 12 - autumn 2007 Bursary (1) Discerning Eye bursaryOne of the Discerning Eye's primary aims is to foster the work of 'young' artists, whether they be young in age or young in their career. To this end, DE has, since 2002, awarded a bursary to an artist in order to support the development of his or her ongoing artwork. The main voice behind the bursary award was the late David Gluck, an original and enduring member of the DE Educational Advisory Board, the body responsible for choosing a winner each year. ![]() Past winners include Jonathan Edgar of the Frink School of Figurative Sculpture in 2002, Stuart Pearson-Wright, via The Prince's Drawing School, and Joan Gabie in 2005.The 2006 bursary was, as in 2005, a 'drawing' bursary, drawing being "a touchstone and tool of creative exploration", as described by Anita Taylor, DE Educational Advisory Board member (and Vice Principal, Professor of Fine Art at Wimbledon School of Art). Last year's award attracted a large number of entries (almost 4 times as many as in 2005), with huge competition for the £1,000 on offer. The judges (Tom Coates, David Gluck, Anita Taylor and James Lloyd) were delighted with the overall high standard of those who applied. The four finalists were Philip Hogben, Gwen Adair, Cath Campbell and Simon Parish, with Cath emerging the front runner.Cath was a surprised and delighted winner. A Fine Art graduate of Newcastle University, she focuses on her main interest, architecture and the urban environment, producing drawings and sculpture, also large scale architectural installations. For the bursary application, Cath submitted two intricate cut out pencil drawings of buildings, each exploring her current fascination with the theme of inaccessibility and the kind of uncertainty as to what is real and what is not: "something that exists in one form or another but you can't necessarily get into it". One drawing was of a building she could not enter, the other of a hospital that has not yet been built. (continued) Copyright © 2002-2010 The Discerning Eye ~ Web site by Shepperton Software |
