2006 prizes and prizewinners

At each ING Discerning Eye exhibition, artists have the opportunity to win one of the many prizes on offer, which range from prizes of £250 awarded to works from eight regional areas from which open submissions are collected, to the £5,000 ING Purchase Prize.

In 2006, prizewinners were announced at the Artists' Private View on 16 November - much to the surprise of some winners who did not realise that the awards were on offer!

The ING Purchase Prize was generously increased by DE sponsors ING to £5,000 in 2006. It was awarded to octogenarian Eric Rimmington for his beautiful still life 'Knife Drawer'. We feature an interview with Eric on page 6.

A new prize was awarded at the 2006 exhibition by 2005 selector Martin Smith and his daughter-in-law Elizabeth. This was the New Discovery Prize, for artists who have not had a solo show.

There were almost 60 works from the open submissions to choose from and after much deliberation the £1,000 award was given to Ann Manie, for her 'Objects in Sunlight', a collage and acrylic work.
