newsletter archive newsletter 8 - autumn 2005 Introduction One of the most pleasing aspects of being involved with Discerning Eye over recent years has been the number of additional activities that we, along with our sponsor ING, have been able to mount, particularly at ING's head office at London Wall where DE and Parker Harris personnel are frequent visitors. Earlier this year, I visited the 5th Floor exhibition space to see Graham Crowley's one-man show, which was very impressive and colourful. At the event Mary Dodwell interviewed Graham about his work and she reports on his painting techniques inside this issue.Another notable visit to the 5th Floor was at the end of August to attend the launch of the DE/ING Drawing School project. This evening brought together, for the first time, our chosen tutors and those members of the ING staff who had signed up for the course.
This project is the latest of our initiatives supported by Arts and Business and represents an unprecedented fourth consecutive award to DE/ING. Also, during the evening, Jane Waller, who works so tirelessly for ING on the ING/DE relationship took everybody on a guided tour of ING's famous Art Collection which was a joy. Works produced by Drawing School students will be exhibited in the ING offices at the beginning of November and we will report on how it went in the next Newsletter. In the meantime, you can read a little more about this initiative on page 6 of this newsletter. On 13 October, the DE Education Committee met at The Arts Club in order to award this year's DE bursary. Artists had been invited, via the Artist Newsletter, over the summer to submit drawings and a statement about why they wanted the award. A full report on how the judging went and details of the finalists can also be found inside this issue, however I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those artists who applied. As is now traditional, back in September, the 2005 Selectors arrived at the Mall Galleries at the start of their two day viewing of Open Submission works for the 2005 exhibition. As is always the case, they all took the process extremely seriously before they made their final selections. The process is always fascinating to watch and I always look forward, as I know the selectors do, to how their selections will actually hang together at the exhibition. ![]() Selection time again! - see pages 2 & 3 I hope that you will all come to this year's exhibition and if possible support the exhibiting artists by buying something whilst there. This year's exhibition opens to the public on Thursday 17 November and will run daily (including Sundays) until Sunday 27 November. For Friends and Members of The Discerning Eye, there is a Special Event/preview evening on Wednesday 16 November 2005 – see inside.Thank you for your continued support.
