newsletter archive newsletter 7 - spring/summer 2005 Introduction Welcome to the Spring/Summer issue of the Discerning Eye Newsletter. Although it seems like an age since the 2004 exhibition, I would like to thank all of the 2004 selectors and, of course, Anne Robinson for agreeing not only to open the exhibition, but for doing it with such wit and charm - as those of you present would have witnessed. As you will see, this issue of the Newsletter gives a full report of the 2004 exhibition. It also features an interview with 2004 ING Prize Winner Graham Crowley, himself a previous selector - in 2002.When you look back over our list of previous selectors, we are proud of the continuing association that many of them maintain with the Discerning Eye.
Apart from the fact that they continue to attend the main exhibition, often purchasing work, David Gluck (selector 1998) and Tom Coates (selector 1999) are stalwarts of the educational committee and Crispin Odey (selector 2002) now gives an annual prize of £1,000 for three-dimensional work. Support for the Discerning Eye also manifests itself in other ways. For example when the Arts Council announced its pilot scheme last year to offer members of the public interest free loans to spend on works of art, another previous selector, Sir Roy Strong (2001) had this to say in The Independent when asked what he would buy with £2,000 – “I would recommend people to invest in prints by going along to contemporary exhibitions … I would particularly go along to The Discerning Eye which is really an alternative to the academy and the reigning doctrinaire views of art”. ![]() Selector Mark Lawson standing by
