I think those of you who attended the 2003 Discerning Eye Exhibition will agree that the exhibition was a great success and that yet again our selectors did the exhibition proud.

A recurring theme in the selectors' notes for the exhibition catalogue over the years has been the responsibility the selectors feel towards the artists during the selection process and the expectation about whether their final selection will come together on the wall and whether it will reveal or expose anything about them they hadn't expected to discover or would prefer kept secret.

Discerning Eye selectors can't hide behind a committee decision, they are on their own as their selections go straight on to the walls of the exhibition.

Having completed the challenging task of deciding which artists to invite and viewing and selecting from around two thousand submitted works before having to choose which works to hang where in their section, further emotions are excitement and anticipation before the first private view followed by relief that the exhibition is at last open to the eyes of the general public. Ultimately there is the pleasure of knowing the works they have selected have been purchased by another person, another person who shares their views on the work enough to want it for their own walls or as a gift for friend.

Inside the pages of this newsletter you will find that we list the names of all the selectors the Discerning Eye has ever had. It is a very impressive list, not only because of who these people are and what they might have achieved in their chosen fields, but because every one of them has embraced the challenge of being a DE selector with genuine enthusiasm for the job in hand and has cared about the outcome.

It is this level of care, combined with the enthusiasm with which all of our previous selectors have embraced the Discerning Eye that keeps the exhibition alive and guarantees to the artists who submit their works year on year that the Discerning Eye exhibition remains fresh and unique.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the 2003 selectors along with all of the previous DE selectors for making the time to take up the challenge of being a selector for the Discerning Eye. Without your care for the arts and appetite for a challenge, the exhibition would not exist.
