Check out the web site!

I am not a metropolitan. I live at the north end of Northamptonshire and make it into the big city perhaps three or four times a year. That's not just London, that's any big city - Birmingham, Manchester, Paris, New York, wherever.

I just like provincial life. This does not mean that I walk round with my head underneath my arm, nor do I point at aeroplanes. I also like to know what goes on, particularly in the arts world. Being involved with The Discerning Eye is one way of doing just that. This Newsletter, it seems to me, is one way of keeping in touch, but since I design it, I won't comment further. Instead, I would like to draw your attention to the Discerning Eye website, www.discerningeye.org.

Liam Donnelly, of Shepperton Software, has made an excellent job of encompassing The Discerning Eye's several and distinct activities, and organising them in an easily navigable fashion. As well as updates on current activities (sales, shows, projects, bursaries) there is a rapidly-expanding archive which I find particularly fascinating (and potentially time-consuming: did Daphne Todd really start her introduction to her selection last year with "my selection is quite unfair, I want to make that absolutely clear"? Yes she did, and I had to spend twenty minutes reading and considering her argument to back it up. As I say, fascinating.)

So, have a look, check it out. And if you can respond positively to the appeal for catalogues from the earliest years of the Discerning Eye exhibition, so much the better - I, for one, would really like to know if earlier selectors nailed their colours to the mast in such a forthright fashion.
