newsletter archive newsletter 3 - may 2003 Friends & members The Discerning Eye WebsiteHaving got to know of The Discerning Eye through my association with its Chief Executive, Tony Humphreys, I was delighted when the DE Board asked me to pitch for the design and build of the Discerning Eye website and the subsequent running and hosting of the site. Although I have a keen natural interest in the visual arts, particularly modern painting (my favourite painter is Miro), and regularly visit exhibitions including The Discerning Eye, I have never had to build such a visually based website before, so this assignment was totally different for me and much more of a creative challenge.Usually, I work on more text based sites where the problem is how to find ways to 'liven up' the material and make it more interesting. Whilst there would be no problem finding images in connection with the Discerning Eye, I was acutely aware that the site would be for a knowledgeable and potentially critical community used to seeing the presentation of high quality visual images. In addition, the site had the potential to attract users who might not be regular users of the internet which meant that I had to make the site as easy to navigate as possible.I decided that the best way to achieve this was to make it feel as much like a magazine as possible whilst at the same time incorporating the board's wishes for it to offer a useful resource and archive of the Discerning Eye's activities. The results can now be viewed at www.discerningeye.org. We hope you enjoy what you find and would welcome your feedback as we will be looking to constantly update and improve the site. Friends And MembersThe Discerning Eye "Friends and Members" scheme was introduced in November 2001. MembersWe have received a letter from a happy member, who lives in St.Monans, Fife, and has expressed her delight in having two of her paintings chosen for the 2002 exhibition. She went on to say that having sold them both was an immense boost to her flagging morale. She came to the private view and thoroughly enjoyed the evening.Membership is open to all artists for a fee of £40 per year. The membership fee entitles artists to submit up to six works in the main Exhibition in November. For non-members, the price of submitting six works is currently £48. Members will also receive a free exhibition catalogue and two Newsletters a year in addition to information on all other Discerning Eye activities. FriendsYou can become a friend of Discerning Eye for an annual fee of £10. Friends will be informed of all Discerning Eye activities, and be invited to the special preview for Friends and Members. Friends will receive a free exhibition catalogue and two newsletters a year. Anybody purchasing a work from the main exhibition will automatically become a Friend for one year at no cost. The 'Friends and Members' scheme is organised by Mrs Jane Wright.
