We organised a Saturday morning trip to the Mall Gallery for 26 adults and their children from Sure Start Battersea. The following is an extract from the letter that we received from Geraldine Finney on behalf of 'Sure Start' after the event -

"A highly excited group of children assembled for a day trip to the Gallery. On our way to the Gallery we discovered that many of our parents and children had never been to the centre of London before, although they live barely four miles away in Battersea. We represented many nationalities, Somali, Afghan, Nigerian, people from various points in the West Indies, French, Spanish, Portugese, Austrian, Turkish and English. We also had our married couple who are profoundly deaf, but who have a hearing child from Bangladesh. The trip was especially meaningful for these people because it was visual.

We entered The Mall Galleries and the normally quiet, staid atmosphere was shattered as we came in as the children were very, very excited by this time! They set off at a gallop and found each work on the walls, which was shown in the catalogue, rushing back to the adult every time they found one and insisting we come and look. The parents were given a short talk about the exhibition by Mia from Parker Harris. They walked around the exhibition at leisure, looking at everything and exclaiming over their finds, rushing to get others to come and look and share their pleasure.

It was a delight to watch. One woman came to me and said 'isn't this great, I feel as though I've been given wings to fly'. What better thanks could anyone have?

Thank you all at Discerning Eye for bringing this bit of magic into our lives, it will never be forgotten."
