newsletter archive newsletter 1 - spring 2002 2001 exhibition review the discerning eye exhibition 2001As can be seen from the list of previous selectors the annual exhibition has attracted an eminent list of artists, collectors and critics over the years. The 2001 exhibition was no exception. It got off to a flying start when at the Sponsors' Private View, Dame Diana Rigg gave a passionate plea to guests to purchase the art on offer. Given the City's nervousness so soon after the 11th September attacks, Dame Diana's request, no doubt combined with the quality of art on show, had the desired effect and kick started sales which, by the end of the two week exhibition, totalled over £71,000.
* Not including purchase prizes which totalled £6,700 ![]() ′Fish Dish′ by Chris Welsh purchase prizesThe ING purchase prize of £3000 was awarded to Lewis Chamberlain for his painting entitled 'Brixton Academy - mid afternoon'. As a result of this award ING Barings gave him a mini-exhibition of his work in their London office.GCI Financial awarded their purchase prize of £1500 to Peter Kelly RBA for his painting of 'The Alcove, Frederiksborg Castle'.The DE Chairman's purchase prize of £1000 went to Richard Pikesley for his painting 'Looking for Old Harry I'.The Benton/Humphreys first prize of £1000 went to John Foster for his painting 'St Ives in January', and the second prize (for works under £750) to Chris Welsh for his work entitled 'Fish Dish' (above). non-purchase prizesThe Meynell/Fenton prize of £1000 went to Roger Whitaker.
These figures exclude the sponsors' private view, the Discerning Eye private view, Friends and Members' lunch and GCI Financial evening. Total attendance at these events is estimated at approximately 1500 people. regional prizesA number of regional prizes included awards to: lvor Davies - Wales; Miriam Dokotliver - Scotland; Sue Watts - North East; Mark Shields - Northern Ireland. regional submissionTransportation costs from outside London are subsidised to encourage the greatest number of works from the regions. In addition to the 1204 works handed in to London, regional submissions were as follows:
The total numbers of works submitted were 1549 from open submission and 262 from the invited artists. A grand total of 1811 works was submitted of which 452 were hung.Of the total number of works entered through the open submission process, 12% were selected for hanging. Two of the prizes were given to works which had come from invited artists and eight were given to works which had come from the open submission.
