bursaries 2007 - fifth bursary the David Gluck memorial bursary michael shawThe winner of the 2007 bursary, announced on 15 November at the Artists' Private View evening of the exhibition, was Michael Shaw. His entry comprised two animated drawings on loop film - 'There, But Not There, 2006' (7m 11s) and 'Doodle, 2007' (6m 8s).This year the bursary has been renamed in memory of David Gluck who contributed so much to the Discerning Eye and its annual exhibition, both as a selector and a committed member of the Discerning Eye Educational Advisory Board whose members advise generally on Discerning Eye activities and also (together with DE Chief Executive Tony Humphreys) choose the winner of the bursary. For the third year the bursary was once again awarded for drawing. An advertisement in 'Artist Newsletter' magazine called for artists to submit up to six transparencies, slides or digital images of their work, along with a written application giving their reasons for deserving the bursary and how they would spend the money. Some 200 applications were received, double the number in 2006 and quadruple that in 2005.The overall standard of proposals was once again very high and the panel met in early October to look through and discuss all applications. The panel's principal aim for awarding the bursary is to support an artist as he or she develops a body of work. ![]() ![]() "There but not There" Michael Shaw ![]() Caroline Hussey - untitled acrylic and gouache on paper After much time, consideration and discussion, five artists were short listed and then invited to exhibit up to three works at the 2007 ING Discerning Eye exhibition. The other short listed artists were Andrew Cheetham, Caroline Hussey, Iain Sharpe, and Madeleine Strindberg and we would like to congratulate and thank them for their participation in the exhibition and wish them all much success with the development of their work.We would also like to thank the Discerning Eye Educational Advisory Board for the time that the members have committed during the process of selection. ![]() Copyright © 2002-2010 The Discerning Eye ~ Web site by Shepperton Software |
