The Discerning Eye has run its annual exhibition since 1990. The exhibition is held at The Mall Galleries in London in mid-November each year and entry is free.

The exhibition comprises both publicly submitted works and works independently selected by six prominent figures from different areas of the art world: two artists, two collectors and two critics. The selectors are solely responsible for their own selection but are asked to select at least 25% of their section from the open submission. It thus provides an unusual opportunity for works by lesser-known artists to be hung alongside contributions from internationally recognised names.

Each selector's section is then hung separately to give each its own distinctive identity, giving the impression of six small exhibitions within the whole.

A key feature of the Discerning Eye exhibition is that all works must be small in scale (no more than 20" in their greatest dimension) and they must also be for sale. The Discerning Eye's commission on sales helps fund our activities.

The material for this archive is drawn from past catalogues and aggregated with information that emerged later (prizewinners etc). You can also find reports relating to the exhibitions throughout the newsletter archive section of this site.

The early exhibitions were sponsored by the founders with major prizes from the London Evening Standard newspaper in 1990 and 1991. There were no exhibitions in 1993 and 1994.

ING took over sponsorship in 1999 and they have continued to do so to the present date.
